(Julie) Started our climb up Roan Mountain. Elevation; 6300 feet. This is the last time we will climb over 6000 feet until Mount Washington in New Hampshire.
Then we climbed over several incredible balds with 360 degree views on this clear day.
I (Mark) decided to be totally free today and walked on Little Hump Mountain in my birthday suit- it was exhilarating. I'm considering making a suggestion to the local hiking club tthat all hikers must hike the balds nude other than socks, boots and backpacks.
(Julie) Might be time to buy Mark a kilt :)
Temperature around 80 degrees, sun shining and a perfect breeze. 5:00 and we just decided to do 3 more miles and we hear loud rumbling. Find a clearing and we see dark coming our way off in the distance. Put on our pack covers and start moving faster. Next thing you know, pouring rain, thunder, lightning, and sure enough we are getting pelted by hail. Now I think I can say we have hiked in it all in our first month. Only I am afraid there is something ahead I am unaware of.
We end our day at Mountain Harbour B & B when we are coming up to it, we see a quaint home with a river running in front of it. Nice wrap around porch with rocking chairs. Horses in the pasture. When we knock on the door, we are directed to the barn. Horses and goats in the bottom of the barn, stinky hikers in the top and real guests in the house. There is a clear pecking order out here. Funny I can't smell the barn animals. Maybe they smell us :)
Dry and comfy. We are welcome to the breakfast buffet in the morning. We will be showered by then.
Our goal is Damascus by Sunday. Kendra and her friends "might" meet us there. The possibility drives us forward.

I found hiking pants for Julie, maybe you need to give them to Mark!
ReplyDeleteMark is in dire need. Another blowout not to mention saggy butt. Damascus we may shop. Thanks. I have suggestions for your next section. We did the addition to our last trip. Incredible.
