August 31. The Notch

We woke to a gorgeous sunrise. Thought it best to start early today after all we have heard about Mahoosic Notch and Arm. As we reached the summit of the twin peaks, we experienced the heaviest wind. It was throwing us off balance. It felt like it would catch my backpack and I would have to get in a strong stance so as not to be knocked over.

We stopped at the shelter 1.5 before the Notch and had some food and water to prepare. We knew when we arrived when we saw huge rocks scattered every which way. It took us one hour and forty five minutes to get through one mile. We had to discern which way to go every few minutes. Sometimes it was up and over, maybe straddling between two or crawling under a cave like structure on our bellies. We had to take our packs off a few times to get through. as we were finishing it began to rain. We didn't speak the words but neither of us wanted to be doing this on wet, muddy, and slippery rocks. The tension was there and suddenly the games were over and we wanted out. It drizzled until we came to a campsite where we put up our tent just in time for the two hour downpour.

Amazingly, we had our first ramen noodle dish with sausage as we waited for the weather. It is now 3:00 and the sun is shining. We are trying to decide if we should attempt the Arm, very steep climb, on these wet rocks or wait it out until morning.

6:40 PM. We decided to wait until morning. We made a campfire until the thunderstorm hit. Back to our tent with confirmation we had made a good decision.

As we talk, we are thinking about Mom Lamphier's cookies. She sure can bake. I love her scotchies. Mark loves all her cookies. In fact, he loves all her cooking! Of course, we all do but Mark gets the most excited about it. These protein bars and beef jerky aren't doing it for him tonight ;)

10 PM. Just woke up both thinking it was 2-3;00. Too much time in the tent.
