Aug 30. On the trail

Yesterday we set out with the decision we can handle whatever comes. We may be slower but we believe together we can do these tough miles.

We took a trail called the Mahoosic Trail to get up to the AT. After a 3 mile up we found the white blaze and headed three miles down the other side of the mountain. We ran into two NoBos (Northbounders) when we realized we had gone the wrong way. We had to hike back up the three miles. Not the best way to start the day. We hiked 14 miles with only 8 to count toward our destination.

When we came to a beautiful campsite, Mark told me to set up camp while he went to get water. He went nearly a mile downhill to fill up and head back to camp. We thought the water source was much closer. By the time he returned, dinner was ready and tent all set to go. In fact, I had just climbed into bed. We agreed we will just stay together from now on.

Today we FINALLY made it to Maine. The welcome to Maine trail was very difficult. They have done away with switchbacks. Extreme ups and downs. There was such a steep down, it took us a while to figure out how we would do it. Took off our backpacks at one point just to maneuver down the cliff like trail. Made for a slow 13 miles. We came almost to this peak called Full Goose. We didn't know if we would find camping at the top so squeezed in to a stealth site knowing we will tackle the climb in the morning. Tomorrow we will do the Mahoosic Notch, known as the most difficult mile on the trail. Today a SOBO told us it took her 3 1/2 hours to complete it. It is also the most fun mile. We may or may not climb the arm that follows.

My hand is improving quickly. Still tender but swelling has gone way down after keeping it in a bucket of ice all day as my brother Gordon suggested.

EZ was having a hard time today. Pack felt very heavy as we are carrying 6 days of food. Cooking again so fuel as well. Tough miles for sure!!

In bed at 7pm. Early night but will take full advantage.
